7 Things You Can’t Say in Canada

7 Things You Can’t Say in Canada

Influential columnist Margaret Wente shares her controversial opinion on seven sacred Canadian cows most dare not criticize.
Margaret Wente
Every culture has its unacknowledged taboos—the things you are forbidden to say or do in polite company, the accepted truths you are not allowed to doubt. You might think that a liberal, open-minded country like Canada would be free of such taboos, but you’d be wrong. In spite of our belief in our own enlightened tolerance, some things are simply not open to debate. If you try, you’re bound to shock the neighbours.
It’s risky to question the wisdom of the tribe. You might get stoned. On the other hand, some people might sneak up to you afterwards and confess that they secretly agree.
So here’s a challenge to a few of our nation’s most widely held beliefs. You say these things in public at your own peril. I will be elaborating on these points over the months to come. Feel free to stone me or secretly agree—or, even better, add to the list. At the very least, they’re sure to start a good dinner-party fight.

1. Margaret Atwood Writes Some Awful Books

The queen of CanLit bestrides the literary world like a colossus. Nobody has won more awards than she has, and nobody is more feared. There is no such thing as a bad review of a Margaret Atwood book in Canada. That’s too bad, because many of her books are tedious and unreadable, full of tortuous plots and unpleasant characters. Why will no one say so? Because we’re grateful that she’s put us on the global map. And because if they do, they’ll never work in this country again.

2. Recycling is a Waste of Time and Money

Once upon a time it was easy to put out the trash. Today, the Garbage Gestapo rule our lives. Every household has become a mini version of the village dump, and every one of us has become a garbage picker, carefully separating our organics from our bottles and papers, and worrying about where our dryer lint is supposed to go.
Don’t try to sneak a wine bottle into the wrong bag! The trash police will punish you. The truth about recycling is that it’s a giant waste of dollars and doesn’t help the environment. But don’t tell your kids. They won’t believe you. They’ve been brainwashed.

3. Only Private Enterprise Can Save Health Care

Tommy Douglas, the CBC’s Greatest Canadian, brought us universal health care. But even his plan didn’t originally pay for everybody’s ingrown toenails. His primary goal was to make sure nobody faced financial ruin if they got sick.
Today we have a system where controlling costs is more important than treating patients, and where ideology is crippling us. In some places, including Toronto, people go blind waiting for cataract surgery. The government could restore their sight tomorrow simply by sending them to a private clinic instead of to a hospital. The cost to the government would be exactly the same. But in Canada, private is a dirty word, and so the government would rather you go blind. Poor Tommy would be spinning in his grave.

4. David Suzuki is Bad for the Environment

From global warming to farmed salmon and genetically modified crops, David Suzuki has just one message: The End is Nigh.
He is our homegrown prophet of doom who preaches the essential wickedness of the human race. Like a modern Savonarola, he warns that unless we cast our material possessions into the bonfire, we’re all going to hell.
The trouble with this apocalyptic vision is that people are starting to tune out. And our hugely expensive investment in the unworkable Kyoto treaty, which Mr. Suzuki tells us doesn’t go nearly far enough, will crowd out more practical measures to cut smog and clean up our waste sites.

5. A National Daycare Program Won't Do a Thing To Help Poor Kids

Cheap national daycare! Who could be against it? It’s supposed to give kids a better start in life, and nobody can object to that. But in Quebec, where the program started, universal daycare has turned out to be nothing more than a giant (and extremely costly) subsidy for relatively well-heeled middle-class parents. Few poor parents use the system.
No doubt convenient daycare is a godsend for many. But so far there is no definitive evidence that kids who go to daycare go on to do better in school or in life. So if we want to invest billions in helping kids, why are we spending it on the kids who need help the least?

6. Group of Seven are Overexposed Genre Painters

I like A.Y. Jackson as much as you do. His paintings remind me of when I went to summer camp. I grew up with a reproduction of The West Wind hanging in our living room. (That was by Tom Thomson, who wasn’t really a member of Group of Seven, but never mind.) Group of Seven were the first artists to depict the wild Canadian landscape, and they were bold young rebels in their time.
But that time was 80 years ago. Today their work is the quintessence of bourgeois picture-postcard art—the kind of art it’s safe to take your mother to see. Enough, already. Maybe it’s time we moved on.

7. The United States is the World's Greatest Force for Good

Of all the shocking things you can say around the dinner table, this is the most shocking one. After all, America-bashing is part of our national identity.
At best, we see our neighbour as a well-intentioned but arrogant and blundering bully that throws its weight around too much. At worst, we see our neighbour as one of the most evil nations in the world. And yet, right now, hundreds of millions of people in India and China and other desperately poor parts of the world are being liberated from millennia of suffering and serfdom. Why? Because of the United States, which has spread its idea of economic freedom—and its purchasing power—around the world.

The website on the back of the box - www.tron20.net  - wonder if it still works ?

I bought the TRON 2.0 video game for my personal computer in 2003, maybe from Radio Shack, or Futureshop. Either it was too late, or I simply forgot to mail in the slip to get the $10 rebate.

Even though I hadn't seen the original TRON (1982) movie for years, and it was a distant memory (because I only watched part of it), it definitely was cool, and always planned to get it in my collection.
Not surprised I finally seen it again (ALL of it),  AFTER the SECOND Tron movie, Tron: Legacy (2010) !

I will add to this blog post in the future.
just thought I would start posting, as yesterday / last night (Wed. May.1st, 2013) when talking / recording The Bloke Show podcast, the movie's name came up during our 1980s MOVIES topic.

CFMJ, MOJO AM RADIO 1999 and Toronto Sun Sunshine Girls

After yesterday's post, here, let us get back to just fun stuff.

A bunch of photos saved from around 1999, when 640 AM radio in Toronto became MOJO, the "GUYS" radio station.
It was sistered with the hard rock Q107 FM radio station.

Katia from Quebec, became an obsession of mine for a little while. The brunette started appearing in the newspaper more often than being merely a Sunshine Girl pic of the day, but also endorsing cigars, expos, and featured in Playboy.

She´s a canadian actress and playboy model born in August 19, 1979 in Montréal, Québec, Canada.

On April 23, 2001, the station re-launched as Mojo Radio, a talk radio format aimed at the male demographic. The station also changed its call letters the same day to the current CFMJ. The new format featured programs hosted by Humble and Fred, John Derringer, Phil Hendrie, Mike Stafford, Andrew Krystal and the syndicated Coast to Coast AM, John Oakley replaced Scruff Connors who had taken over from Humble and Fred in the morning show; the latter pair left for hot adult contemporary station Mix 99.9. Krystal moved to part-time work at CFRB and CKTB before moving to Halifax. Derringer's Mojo show was discontinued as he concentrated on his marquee morning show on "brother station" Q107.

FOR a VERY long time, at least since 2009, I have had shadow people in my apartment. As time goes on, they are revealing more of themselves to me, and with them, pinpoint flashes of bright light, as if a micro cameraflash shot a picture of me.

This past week, when I was preparing vegetables in the kitchen and washing in the sink, I seen to the left of me - a basketball size spinning, revolving, pulsing type of "star" (for lack of a better word) appeared for a full couple seconds.
It dazzled me more than shocked or scared me after all these years of various things I have seen and witnessed and felt on and INSIDE my skin.

It was pointy all around and kept sequencing faster than any kind of movie special effect. It was similar, but far advanced to any type of  flashing "star" in the sky.

In the past, while sitting in my living room, I have seen bolts of light, not like lightning, but some sort of jagged electrical streams of light appear,  from the  ceiling of my kitchen down into the floor to go to the next floor. The lights that streamed through, and zapped through, the ceiling, and many times were BESIDE / on BOTH sides of, the fluorescent ceiling lights.

The split-second moving shadows usually are in my vision, but in the past year, now sometimes can see them hugging the walls as they walk,
I can see them in a similar way that was shown in the Arnold Schwarzenegger movie PREDATOR. There is a displacement of light, it is fuzzier, than all the air that takes up the rest of the clear air in the room, in the shape of a body. It is as if I can see "through" them.

I tried a simple banishment spell/ritual with salt, and even unplugged everything and shut off all power from the fuse box too, and I thought that got rid of them.
For a few hours, yes,  but then, they (it?) returned, just with far , far less annoyances.
Either most of them left and it worked on them, or they went into hiding/stealth-mode, wondering what was next for me to try on them?

It has been a few months since that, and the activity is getting stronger.

The much darker / blacker, more solid shadows, are walking back and forth more often from my bedroom closet. Sometimes there is a LOUD BANG / LOUD CRACK! from the sliding closet doors, and then the shadow(s) move in front of the bedroom table lamp.
Either they do not realize this makes them visible,or they want me to know they are here.
As I re-edit this and keep typing they are darting super-quickly, excitedly.
they are excited due to panic? or laughter?

Also, small pitch black coloured bugs or rodent sized shapes without any features, just PITCH BLACK, have run across my desk, or the coffee table, in front of me, have crawled over my feet or hands, and I am repulsed.
The tiny shadows are cold and wet.

In the past month, before the banishment spell, (more than?) one time, I felt a wet poke on my knee, as if a dog or cat pressed his nose on me.

and in the middle of the air, about 4 or 5 feet in the air, I will see an oval distortion, usually black, but a few times it was clear/snowy like a TV screen, as if something is trying to materialize.

This all sounds pretty crazy to many of you, right?

When I was messaging Cael, from occult-black metal band Morbid Ceremony, on facebook (before I deactivated my profile), and in the computer screen's refection, behind me, over my shoulder, SOMEBODY's HEAD/SKULL appeared for ONE SECOND!
I could not see or remember any features, maybe it was only all blacker than black, like the bugs that occasionally have appeared and disappeared into think air, after running over my fingers
Maybe if I could have someone that is trustworthy to hypnotize me, to make me slow down my mind and vision to explain WHAT I have seen since 2008 or 2009??

Interesting, this crazy activity started being noticeable after I returned from visiting a guy who is OBSESSED with freemasonry.
His apartment was full of their books and objects, he was also wearing masonic jewellery too, yet claimed he was "exposing" them.

No. He was lying to himself.

Since then, his life became a shambles and wound up living in the street and destroyed (and still destroying) most of his friendships.
He is POSSESSED and many of you will laugh, thinking it is a joke and a fairy tale, and that it just cant happen.

That basketbal//volleyball sized "star" that lit up the whole room, appearing for 2 seconds in the far corner of the kitchen which is not visible to or from any window, was definitely a sign that something is happening,

It was a sign of something coming, but what?
None of this is "in my mind", which is what pill-pushers/psychaitrists want every person that experiences these kinds of things to believe .

I have cut out beer drinking more and more the last year, to where I abstain for lengthier periods, NOW I have been sober for over one solid month now.
Wanted to see for myself if all this paranormal / unknown experiences was due to drinking, or if that didn't matter.

Is it possible a curse was put on me? All the satanic metal in my collection has to do with it? The pornography I viewed?

i hope i caught it on camera !

in 2002 I started having some really nightmarish stuff happen, which YEARS LATER were also made into Hollywood movie scenes! Things O have never told anyone!
Some of bizarre stuff I think has followed me to all the different places I lived in.

When NOBODY was home, or nobody is in the hallway, a GIGANTIC loud BANG, somebody slapping/punching my door or the wall wakes me up, or out of twilight sleep.

I have had other tenants ask me if I heard it, because they then started to immediately jump out of their chair they sat in by their door, and open the door to confront the asshole who was doing it, but nobody was there, and could not possibly have disappeared/run away that quickly, as even a closing door would have been spotted and heard.

There are some other happenings from back then, I might tell another time, or will gather it all for a book.

I have been attempting to digitally video record the phenomenon during the past couple years.
Not much was useful.

I showed footage of the camera being moved by itself up and down, or side to side, and the reaction was, it should be secured on a tripod, that the mechanism inside made it move.

At almost the same times everyday?
Just like when I see and then feel a cod chill after the closet door "cracks" and I see a shadow?

Or it appearing every day around 3 am?

My GPS Coordinates, Longitude and Latitude, is almost exact the same as a Masonic hall near me.
Freemasons build on leylines, for power.

I am still seeing them right now walking around in the morning light, almost as if they know what I am about to post.

they are peering at me from my peripheral vision many times.
I really hope that SOMETHING finally will appear on camera, but usually the clear digital screen/recording is GRAINY and nobody cares about that, as it doesn't matter my other recordings are crystal clear for comparison
here are some links for further reading.

There is also other strange things. Like being aable to see I have two sets of arms,  trying to get up but am too heavy, and then realize, I am asleep.
Also when "asleep",I see through the floor s into other people apartments, so am curious if what I seen was real or not.
Such as I confronted someone in a dream" that broke into my apartment, and then that same week, seen him for the first time in my life in the elevator! The shock of seeing him took all my breath and I thought for a few seconds I was going insane.

SHIMMER 54 this weekend, Allison Danger, will retire from working inside the ring

Loving it, the Canadian Ninjas on the poster !

This past Saturday at SHIMMER 53 in Secaucus, NJ, SHIMMER fans and wrestlers alike said farewell to Ayumi Kurihara, who competed in her final match in the United States before her impending retirement in Japan during August. Additionally, this Saturday & Sunday, April 13th & 14th, we will witness the conclusion of the in-ring career of SHIMMER original and co-founder Allison Danger, as part of the SHIMMER 54-57 tapings.

This weekend in Berwyn, Allison Danger will compete for the final time inside the SHIMMER ring, before assuming a larger backstage role within the promotion going forward.
Even though the webstreaming quality is lower than their DVD's, I might have ordered more SHUIMMER IPPV's. Better for me though, as I can't afford them plus buying the dvd's.

SHIMMER 53 was great

If you did not order the Internet PPV, I think you can still buy it as "VOD" Video On Demand.

The only downsides are the streaming video quality is not as great as the official dvd's and the camera work was a little too zoomed out, or at least at first it seemed like.
edit: HAHAHHAHA ! SO FUNNY! My first post over there in 2013 accidentally deleted! hahaha,

SHIMMER office Administrator Reply #310 Today at 1:24pm
" Looks like I may have accidentally deleted a post I was trying to reply to in this thead posted earlier today. The question asked was whether or not the 53 quality will be changed for the DVD release from what was presented on the iPPV. The answer is yes. We'll be revising the edit to use the best camera shots possible of everything for the duration of the show, add replays, etc. It will also obviously be upgraded video quality so it looks like all of our DVDs, using the source tapes which were in each of the cameras that day. Once the DVD edit is finished, that version of the footage will also replace the initial live version of the show on both the WWNLive.com and ClickWrestle.com VOD of the show. "

Spring cleaning ?

The other day I de-activated my Spaceman facebook account. A couple posts by others bothered me, and I usually ignore a lot, and do not post replies to anything unless in an energetic mood (powered by caffeine), but considering what this holiday (re:HOLY DAY) weekend means, they started to make me grind my teeth.

No point in arguing against antichristian excrement, and I would have to start deleting more than one person off my "friends" list (funny how the ones pissing me off, asked to be added, I did not seek most of them !)

Since not many email, look at this blog, or my myspace, only a handful of you know.

R.R.R #2 will be clearer, and less messy/"punk-rock zine" looking. Already have a LOT of cool bands that agreed to interviews and a couple more wanting in,which is cool. Glad they sound good too and not crap I don' t like.

ALSO really hope to get more than band interviews. There are some female wrestlers into heavy tunes and I plan to find them!
For example, Kellie Skater, the Aussie made of adamantium, her ring entrance music
"Don't Stop At The Top" by Children Of Bodom

Ok, maybe not the heaviest of metal, but still kind of cool. Check the list in the comments if curious about others choices.

This Saturday, I will probably be watching the SHIMMER Internet PayPerView (see the previous post), and hoping the tagteam of THE CANADIAN NINJAS (Nicole Matthews and Portia Perez) continue to dominate !
I don't see Courtney Rush on the card yet, but am keeping my fingers crossed, as she has been working all over the place the last year it seems and kicking as much ass as KC Spinelli
